Hiking, Backpacking Newfoundland
Dramatic coastlines, sweeping barrens, thick boreal forests, and ancient rock formations – the natural, wild beauty of this place surrounds you at every turn. The sun rises here first, on the most easterly point on the continent.

The unique geological landscape of Newfoundland and Labrador attracts scientists and rockhounds from across the globe. It tells the remarkable story of Earth’s evolution and features some of the oldest rocks in the world.
We visited Newfoundland to hike The East Coast Trail last September and found so much more. It takes a day of travel to get there – worth it!
First, the coastline and trails are stunning. We also got to see wildlife: various sea birds, eagles, cute little Puffins, frogs, jellyfish, sea urchins, seals, a grouse, a red fox, and moose tracks! It was too late in the season for whales.
Second, wild blueberries were growing everywhere! Third, we got to examine 650 million-year-old fossils up close – very cool. And many historical sites are along the trails.
And lastly, the community is so friendly and welcoming. It is mostly made up of Irish immigrants/heritage, so it was like visiting Ireland in a lot of areas. The scenery, the people, the food – incredible!
